FIX YOUR OWN BIKE
In my time working as a cycle mechanic the main service I was providing was inner tube replacements. Sometimes people couldn't even afford the service which was £4 for the inner tube and £10 for labour charge. I worked in croydon and the roads are not the best, so every day was a new face or the same customer. Replacing a inner tube is the easiest service regards to a bike but there are also ways to avoid getting punctures even in the worst road conditions that I applied and taught to customers so they could do it themselves but most times it was so busy that I never had the time to even replace an inner tube because its first come first serve.
This brochure is a practical, easy-to-follow guide designed to help cyclists replace a flat tyre and inner tube with confidence while also taking extra measures to help them avoid getting one in the future or at least they don’t have to worry about a puncture for a while. This is aimed at beginners and everyday cyclists, it breaks down the repair process into eight clear steps, from removing the tyre to choosing the right inner tube and inflating it correctly.
The design combines visual clarity with urban utility, using iconography, simplified illustrations, and real-world imagery to support understanding. Each page focuses on one actionable step, reducing overwhelm and encouraging DIY bike maintenance. The tone is informative yet approachable, aligning with the needs of community cyclists and casual riders.
This project explores how design can empower everyday problem-solving and promote cycling culture by making cycle care more accessible.
